Politeness Strategies Used by Students’ in Virtual World

This thesis aims to investigate the usage of Brown and Levinson’s Politeness strategies; do not do the FTA, do the FTA, without redressive action, baldly, with redressive action, positive politeness, and negative politeness in facebook. The objective of this study is to portray the Politeness Strategies used by students’ in facebook, because facebook as one of the most famous social networking site in virtual world and the interaction inside of the using politeness strategies in facebook is interesting to be analyzed.

The writer puts some theory and concept related with this research about politeness topic. Those are pragmatics approach, concept of politeness, theory of politeness strategy of Brown and Levinson, the circumstance of sociological variable, concept of virtual world, and concept of facebook. Descriptive qualitative method was used to elaborate and to perform the data in order to draw logical correlation to the problem statement. In doing analysis, the writer uses dialogue there are; status and comment from the students as the data. The writer takes data randomly, there are 13 data; 8 data from Teknokrat English Club and 5 data from Lingkar Pena Teknokrat group in facebook analyzed based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies. The end of analysis, the writer finds the answer of the problem formulation.

In conclusion, of the analysis has analyzed which shows that the theory of Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies applied in facebook. From the conversation has been analyzed, they are; without redressive action,baldly, positive politeness, and negative politeness. In addition, it considers the parameters of politeness to decide whether the utterances can be categorized as polite or not such as; the social distance (D) “the speaker and the hearer symetric relation”, the relative power (P) “the speaker and the hearer asymetric relation”, absolute ranking (R) “imposition in the particular culture”. From all of kinds Brown and Levinson politeness strategies, positive politeness is mostly used in every status and comment among the student in facebook. It is because of closed relationship among the student.
